Diamonds (and pearls) are a girl’s BFF

Hey friends,

Jena here.

If you didn't already know, I am obsessed with pearls. They are honestly such a stunning part of my formulations. I deeply adore the power and ancient wisdom that Pearls bring to the Agent line and products (they've been used in traditional Chinese medicine & Ayurveda for years - and anything backed by ancient wisdom, I am all in on). Pearl's don't come cheap, though. I never cut corners, and I spend HUGE amounts of money sourcing the highest quality pearls possible for my formulations. Sourcing the best quality saltwater pearls makes them 10x the price of freshwater pearls. Finding the very best suppliers has been a massive part of my journey to ensure the best quality for you and my products.

A huge reason that I love pearls is because of the power they hold against hyperpigmentation. This is something that so many people suffer with (particularly in the summer months), and if you have ever got those annoying patches of skin that are slightly different colored, you may have suffered from it too. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the melanin in our bodies (one of the pigments in our skin that forms our skin color) starts to increase abnormally fast. There are lots of different types including:

Freckles - small brown spots (mainly driven by genetics);
Lentigines - better known as age and liver spots;
Melasma - similar to age spots but over larger patches of skin;
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - marks left behind by skin conditions like acne;
And more.

But regardless of which type of hyperpigmentation you might be struggling with, and irrespective of the cause (whether it's genetic or driven by sun exposure, HEV light from your laptop. Phone, computer, etc. - or stress or hormones), your skincare regime is a critical part of the puzzle in alleviating and reducing hyperpigmentation (as well as stopping it from returning). And pearl powder? It might be your missing piece of the puzzle.

Pearl powder is one of my most adored ingredients in my Agent formulations. They are so luxurious, and special and have been used as a health tonic, as well as being applied directly to the skin, for centuries now. The extensive benefits of pearl and pearl powder come from the abundance of minerals within each pearl (and the insane importance of these minerals for our general health and skin health is something that the world is only just catching onto).

Pearl powder has an incredible 17 amino acids (including 8 of which can't be created or synthesized by the human body) and 30 trace minerals, including magnesium (you know I LOVE magnesium), silica, selenium, calcium, iron, and more. So for skin care and topical application, it is the dream. Packed with high mineral content and adaptogenic properties, pearl powder has also been found to help nurture brighter, lighter, better textured, bouncier and healthier skin.

Pearl powder lightens and brightens skin thanks to the complex protein inside pearl called Conchiolin. This is how it helps with hyperpigmentation. Conchiolin is powerful because it has been shown to inhibit Tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production (also associated with the development of hyperpigmentation). Pearl or pearl extract helps to slow or stop the activation of the endothelin tyrosinase and inhibits the skin from promoting melanocyte differentiation. Conchiolin also hydrates and nourishes the skin, helps in the fight to rebuild collagen and also helps the skin barrier to retain moisture - so not only does it help with hyperpigmentation management but it can also help with general skin health.

The amino acids in pearls also promote the growth of skin cells (skin regeneration here we come!) as well as helping with free radical removal within the body.

Finally, one of my favorite facts about pearl powder is that it is also the richest source of calcium on the planet. When ingested, this oceanic adaptogen stimulates the appearance of collagen production and regeneration for youthful, clear skin and healthy hair and nails. Its high magnesium content also elevates the appearance of GABA levels in the body to lessen the impact of oxidative stress that leads to premature aging as well as boosting the mood by supporting your neurotransmitters. If that isn't powerful, the I don't know what is.

Pearl powder is so incredible that I have formulated with it in a number of my products:

holi (mane) - incredible for flourishing hair, radiant skin and resilient nails. Our exclusive product combines two daily powerhouse super foods: marine collagen and pearl powder. It's world-class. Shop yours here
holi (water) - our pearl and rose hyaluronic essence, which uses organic plant extracts, precious minerals, and natural acid to improve the skin's elasticity, tighten pores, and gently remove expired cells to reveal a hydrated, dewy glow. It is so beautiful to apply. You can feel your skin being drenched in moisture. Shop yours here; and
holi (youth) - Agent's adaptogenic fusion of herbs and earth medicines balances hormones, calms the mind, and minimizes inflammation. This blend harnesses the magic of the sea with a trio of spirulina, marine collagen, and pearl to harmonize the brain, while holy basil eases stress and regulates cortisol. Get yours here

For me, pearl is such a staple addition to your skincare routine and is so powerful on its own, but if you are really struggling with hyperpigmentation or your skin health, you can also supplement your pearl powder with the Agent Nateur holi (c). It's a potent duo of vitamin C, calcium and Vitamin K. The calcium ketogluconate is a French-patented natural complex molecule that helps restore the skin's elasticity for a youthful, plump appearance and the Vitamin C (in the form of Sodium ascorbyl phosphate) is a potent yet gentle form of vitamin C that is readily absorbed and clinically-proven to brighten the complexion's appearance, improve skin's texture, and reduce hyperpigmentation and age spots. Mix this with holi (water) for the ultimate skin nourishment and repair.

And finally? Remember that it's always easier to prevent and stop hyperpigmentation rather than correct it, so it goes without saying that a non-toxic SPF 50 for your face is critical. Stay tuned for our very own Agent product launching soon. And if things get really bad for you? Look into micro needling and laser work on your face for the pigmentation but always go to a highly recommended dermatologist or doctor for these treatments.

So, add some pearl powder to your regime. If you take holi (mane), you can add it to your wellness regime by making my watermelon smoothie, linked here. It's my favorite way to take it.

Commit to pearl powder and watch what happens. I'm excited for you!
