In short: the Huberman view is not blind hype. He asks for rigorous science. He points out the limitations. But he also cites the existing human and mechanistic evidence for collagen’s benefits when used appropriately.

The Evidence for Collagen (Especially Marine Collagen)

Let’s walk through some of the strongest scientific findings:

Skin hydration, elasticity, wrinkles

  • A randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled study on freshwater marine collagen found that after 12 weeks, participants had a 35% reduction in wrinkle depth from baseline (and 24 % vs placebo). Skin elasticity and hydration also improved.  
  • In a larger review and meta-analysis of oral collagen supplementation, improvements were found in skin hydration, elasticity, and dermal collagen density.  
  • Evans et al conducted a blinded human trial in women 45–60 using marine hydrolyzed collagen and saw significant improvements in skin health compared with placebo.  
  • Trehan et al studied “Skin Radiance Collagen” (marine collagen + antioxidants) in healthy adults and observed reduced wrinkle depth, improved hydration, and better hair matrix health after 8 weeks versus placebo.  

These data suggest that marine collagen peptides, when hydrolyzed (i.e. broken into small chains), can influence dermal health, moisture retention, and structural integrity over time.

Hair & nails: growing evidence

  • In a rodent + cell model, fish collagen peptides (CP) enhanced hair regrowth and proliferation of human dermal papilla cells in vitro. The peptides upregulated growth factors like IGF-1 and VEGF, and activated Wnt/β-catenin signaling (important in hair growth).  
  • A study showed AP collagen peptides (APCPs) increased hair elasticity and gloss by increasing amino acids, lipids, and keratin expression, while reducing surface roughness.  
  • In a mechanistic ex vivo human hair follicle model, both marine and bovine collagen peptides helped preserve follicle stem cells and maintain follicles longer in the growth (anagen) phase, suggesting a role in mitigating hair thinning and shedding.  

Though human trials on hair and nails are more limited than skin, the mechanistic and preclinical data are promising.

Why Marine Collagen Often Leads the Discussion

Marine collagen (e.g. from fish scales or skin) has some advantages that make it appealing in supplementation:

  1. Higher bioavailability: because many marine sources are lower molecular weight and easier to digest, absorption may be greater.  
  2. Sustainability: fish byproducts (skins, scales) are often underused and can reduce waste, making marine sourcing more eco-efficient when handled responsibly.  
  3. Lower risk of contamination: properly sourced marine collagen tends to have lower risk of transmissible pathogens compared to some land animals when regulation is tight.  
  4. Ethical / dietary acceptability: for some people who avoid bovine or porcine sources, marine may align better with dietary or religious preferences.
