Collagen’s affect on hair (and why ours is different)

Collagen’s affect on hair (and why ours is different)

As we get older, our hair often gets left to fend for itself. Why? Because as we age, collagen production slows down (particularly from 25 years onwards), and so the human body starts to naturally direct any collagen to the most vital parts of the body (like organ and organ function) rather than areas like hair, nails, and skin.

If this is exacerbated by other lifestyle factors (discussed further below), hair thinning and hair shedding can become a very real, very upsetting situation for men and women worldwide. Many don't know where to turn, with the traditional medical community often telling them this is a 'normal' and 'natural' part of aging. It's not.

Since learning about this, hair health and strength became a major driving factor in why Jena formulated holi (mane). The marine collagen in holi (mane) not all only provides the body with the four most important types of collagen (types 1, 2, 3, and 4) in the ultimate bioavailable format but also is packed with exquisite pearl powder to assist the body in creating new collagen laying the foundations for healthy hair growth and regrowth.

Ok, back to basics. What is hair shedding?

It's thought to be normal to shed somewhere between 50 - 100 hairs a day but when the body starts to shed or lose more than this, it can be classified as 'excessive hair shedding' and be a sign that something else is going on within the body that is driving these imbalances in hair production.

It's essential, however, to distinguish between hair loss and hair shedding because these are different conditions.

Hair loss is when something stops the hair from growing within the body (a condition known as anagen effluvium). In contrast, hair shedding (known as telogen effluvium) is when your body's production of hair follicles and strands reduces - often temporarily or in the short term, and sometimes later growing back.

Let’s go deeper

Hair shedding is also often known as ‘thinning hair’. Thinning hair is when it is still present, but it is thinner, shorter, and less pigmented than before.

Hair shedding and thinning hair is thought to be driven by factors like:

A high emotional / high-stress lifestyle, or a life with drastic dynamic (and often negative) changes;
Traumatic events (including stressful or traumatic births, death, grief, heartbreak, etc);
Changes in diet and / or nutritional profiles (like veganism);
Significant weight loss; and
Hormonal changes (often associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding).

Hair shedding is often thought to be temporary, and once the stressful event or life phase has started to pass (and perhaps most importantly, when the body has processed it), new strands of hair will begin to grow back. For most people, a head of hair can be back to its usual thickness within six to nine months - and if this is you, we will get into the ways that holi (mane) can help with strengthening.

And what about hair loss?

Hair loss is different. It is when hair stops growing altogether and is often more hereditary or genetically driven.

Male baldness is more commonly understood than female pattern baldness, but female pattern baldness in terms of hair loss is also a real thing, with around one-third of women noticing some hair loss or hair changes at some point in their life.

If you are suffering from male or female pattern baldness, alopecia or hair loss, you can also check out our newest product holi (locks). It’s backed by advanced hair science and clinical studies. It includes scientifically proven active ingredients, an array of shine-inducing compounds, and more to stimulate and encourage healthier-looking hair.

What else for hair loss? Considering hormonal imbalances

When hair loss situations arise, it’s always good to look deeper than just your head of hair - instead of looking into the root cause of what is going on inside the body. Always consult your doctor and start asking root-cause questions like - are you experiencing hormonal imbalances or perhaps higher testosterone levels than you should be?

Always get your hormones checked by a medical provider. It would help if you explored this because the hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT can harm the hair follicle and often trigger hair to fall out.

Similarly, if you struggle with PCOS (polycystic ovaries) or are heading into menopause, hormonal changes in estrogen and progesterone can further drive these imbalances that can cause hair loss.

Can collagen help with hair strengthening?

Yes.

Collagen is a critical component in the game of hair health, hair production, generation, and regeneration. Some of the more important functions of collagen in the bid for better hair health are that:

1. Collagen increases the elasticity of hair and hair follicles -collagen is an amino acid, and all of your hair follicles needthese amino acids to produce keratin. This protein promotes hair growth, strength, and elasticity so ensuring strong levels of collagen in the body can help you to promote your hair strength.
2. Collagen strengthens the layer of skin that contains the hair root - collagen may help the appearance of age-related hair loss and thinning because it makes up around 70% of the dermis (the middle layer of skin that contains the root of each hair follicle). This helps promote optimally healthy blood vessels in the dermis, which allows for better diffusion of nutrients in the follicle. Collagen supplements help support strong foundations for hair follicles, delivering your hair the nutrients they need.
3. Collagen revitalizes the look of hair follicles - collagen is a natural antioxidant which means that it neutralizes any damaging free radicals in the body that can also play a major part in the fight against the appearance of hair loss. Collagen, alongside the pearl powder in the product, another powerful antioxidant, both work to neutralize these damaging free radicals, which helps hair follicles.

And it’s not just speculation.

Let’s get into the studies

One of the most promising studies is linked here, where a six-month, random, double-blind, placebo-controlled study looked at the effects of a marine complex supplement on hair growth in men who were struggling with hair.  They specifically looked at hair count and hair density.

We’ve done the reading for you and what we have learned from this study is that “a dietary supplement containing a high-quality marine complex can not only decrease the appearance of hair shedding but also promote the look of hair growth in men with thinning hair”.

The outcomes of this study lay the foundations for the power of marine collagen  in both men and women all over the world.

Is holi (mane) made from marine collagen?

Yes. Our holi (mane) product is packed with marine collagen and is a highly bioavailable combination of Type 1, 2, 3 and 4 collagen (which is rare).

And why do we choose marine?

Marine collagen is also absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently than other types of collagen. It is also super jam-packed with 8 out of 9 essential amino acids that the body needs - including glycine and proline, both critical building blocks for the body to create collagen.

Agent Nateur’s collagen is far superior to other forms of collagen on the market. One of the main reasons for this is that we only use non-agglomerated collagen.

What is agglomerated collagen?

Agglomerated collagen is collagen peptides that have been put through an agglomerator - a machine that causes material to gather and collect into rounded balls.  Once this has happened, brands who formulate with agglomerated collagen then often bind these ‘rounded balls’ with substances like gums, starches, oils and water (and sometimes even with dangerously inflammatory oils like sunflower oil). This process makes the granules appear bigger and larger and is also why this type of agglomerated collagen dissolves more easily.

If you’re consuming agglomerated collagen in your products what this means is that you are getting:

A smaller dose of collagen;
A less pure dose; and
A dose that is probably mixed with tons of nasties and fillers.

It’s for these reasons that Jena only ever formulates holi(mane) with non-agglomerated collagen which makes it the highest quality of collagen on the market, with no corners being cut.

What types of collagen is holi (mane) made from?

Types 1, 2, 3 and 4!

Type 1 collagen is the most abundant source of collagen found in the human body and is the one most known for good hair, skin and bone health.

Type 2 is most important for joint health because it builds cartilage and a recent trial found that people who ingested type II collagen for 6 months on a consistent basis saw reduction in pain and joint stiffness in their physical function.

Type 3 is awesome for skin health and works alongside Type 1 collagen to build the skin, vessel walls and the fibers of nearly all tissues in the body.

And finally, type 4 focuses on building out the basement membrane of our cells and works as a ‘scaffold’, as well as helping with cell survival, movement, adhesion and more.

Take it from our customer reviews, our superior quality, bioavailable, non-agglomerated, marine collagen based holi (mane) is a revolutionary product that will help you avoid guesswork and self supplementation and take a significant step forward in your hair health journey.

Our founder Jena has seen the most insane overhaul of the health of her hair since taking holi (mane) religiously. Her hair used to be broken and damaged, particularly after coloring, and now it is the longest, strongest and silkiest it has ever been. We recommend giving yourself three months to see results.
