Eyes On The Prize: Say Goodbye to Dark Circles with Holi (Glow) Secrets, Daisy and Hawkweed Extract
holi (glow) is a really special product for me because it came out of my own journey of falling out of love with my under-eye area, thanks to the insane wildfire pollution in California a few years back. It was the product that sent me on the journey of formulation with a key goal of creating a luxurious, balm-based product that protects the delicate skin around the eyes from free radical damage and pollution, while also reducing the appearance of dark circles and eye bags.
Our holi (glow) serum contains two powerful ingredients that combined together work synergistically to not only combat dark circles but also to really soothe, smooth, calm and nourish the eye socket area. These two ingredients are Daisy Extract and Hawkweed Extract and I can’t wait to tell you more about them.
Daisy Extract, also known as Bellis Perennis Extract, is a non-toxic extract derived from the Daisy Flower. It’s something I LOVE to formulate with because of its ability to brighten the skin and prevent hyperpigmentation (and the studies back this up). Daisy Extract has been shown to inhibit the production of tyrosine, an amino acid that is necessary for the formation of melanin, by as much as 50%. This makes it an effective and safe alternative to harsh ingredients like Hydroquinone and Kojic Acid. Daisy Extract also contains organic acids like tartaric and malic acids, which are known for their exfoliating and lightening properties, helping with those under-eye bags that sometimes we can’t seem to shake. I love how studies are now starting to show how powerful Daisy Extract is.
It’s photoprotective too! A 2021 study also looked into whether Daisy Extract was photoprotective when incorporated into cosmetics. Human skin cells were exposed to UV radiation and then treated with Daisy Extract. The extract helped to protect the cells from damage caused by the UV light and also had anti-inflammatory effects. The results suggest that Daisy Extract could be used as a natural ingredient in cosmetics to protect the skin from UV damage. So, use this eye cream alongside your daily SPF for double protection.
Hawkweed Extract is the other extract in this beautiful combination. It is derived from a flowering plant in the daisy family called Hieracium Pilosella. This extract is also known for its ability to reduce the appearance of puffiness and brighten the eye socket and under eye area. Its real power lies in how it works to reduce the appearance and darkness of under-eye circles and bags.
Hawkweed Extract helps the body to create and produce heme oxygenase, which breaks down heme, a dark-colored molecule that hosts an iron atom. The build-up of blood-colored products and accumulation of heme from blood leakage in the eye socket area creates the appearance of dark circles. By reducing the build-up of heme, reducing vascular endothelial growth factor, and preventing the build-up of melanin, Hawkweed Extract helps to minimize the appearance of dark circles and eye bags.
One of my favorite studies was on a cream that used a blend of both of these ingredients and the results were BIG! It showed that a combined formula noticeably improved the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation around the eyes in just two weeks, with continuous improvement up to 12 weeks. Test subjects also reported a significant reduction in puffiness (73%) and dark circles (93%), leaving them with a refreshed and rejuvenated look.
Both Daisy Extract and Hawkweed Extract are packed with antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce cell damage and redness, and soothe the skin. Together, they make our holi (glow) a truly illuminating product that can be used as a gel, balm, and even as a highlighter. And what makes the product even more trustworthy and powerful? The patents behind this beautiful, topical, herbal composition.
The patent explains that the product also stimulates autophagy. Autophagy is the natural process by which our cells remove waste and toxins, keeping them healthy and functioning properly. Stimulating autophagy can help keep the skin under the eyes looking bright and fresh by clearing away damaged or old cells that can make the skin look dull or tired. In addition to this, the combination also activates VEGF-C production, reduces melanin synthesis, and improves energy and cell function. VEGF-C stands for Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor C. It is a protein that plays a crucial role in the growth of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels in the body. When produced in the under-eye area, it can help improve circulation and reduce puffiness, which is often caused by a buildup of fluid in the area. It can also improve the overall health and appearance of the skin in that area by promoting better oxygenation and nutrient delivery to the cells.
So, together, these are ingredients that will not stop until they have worked their magic on your under-eye and eye socket areas - and this product is just that - definitely one of our most magical.
